MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE HITS SAN ONOFRE

BASILONE ROAD NEAR SURF BEACH

SAN ONOFRE, Calif. - A massive earthquake shook most of Southern California early Sunday, rattling nerves of surfers. There were immediate reports of injuries and damage, authorities said. The magnitude-7.5 quake struck about 8:40 a.m. and was centered exactly under San Onofre , according to a preliminary report by the U.S. Geological Survey. Murphy the Mayor of San Onofre, said the quake lasted six to seven minutes and shook surfers and the nuclear plant.. "Nothing was broken. But it was pretty scary. It was a big one," Murphy said. Ranger Hal Dairywimple said the quake had a rolling sensation that startled some out-of-town guests. "I walked outside and we did have some guests outside, talking about the quake and in full panic," he said. "They said, 'I didn't know you had those here!'" The quake was felt as far west as Hawaii and as far south as Cabo, 1000 miles southwest of San Onofre.

From The Mayors Office

Well, just like I said Yesterday, 15-25 knot west wind was on it this morning along with heavy drizzle. The surf was small and bumpy, but that didn't stop the you-know-who's from going out. Even with the bad weather there was a long line at the gate today, and the speeders were at it again. Whats their hurry? The surf sucks and still they think they have to rush to find a spot to park (like their going to beat someone to a prime spot). Maybe their thinking, "Dam lets hurry and go out before the wind stops and it gets glassy"! Nothing new from the Puttzle yet, more later------maybe

From The Mayors Office

Just got an E-mail from the Puttzle, he really likes it over there and says that we can't call Jimmy Grumpy anymore because he is so happy to be there too. Grumpy found another piece of property that is 6 acres with 2 green houses and a nice home and put in a bid, he hopes to hear in a couple of days if he gets the place. Now on the home front, the surf was blown out and smaller today, but the Talegalites again could not resist the waves and went out to flounder. Water temp is about 58 deg. so bring some warm gear, the wind is going to be 15-25 knots from the west all weekend so stay in bed a snuggle with a good book. More later-------maybe

Well the south wind was on it right off the bat this morning, but while sitting at the gate this morning you could see the fire burning on the Marine Base. It seems lately that no matter how bad the surf is the Talegalites go out in mass numbers. Ranger P. was parked next to me this morning when a speeder came flying down the road, she took off after him Red lights flashing, this guy was moving. A few minutes later she came back and said the guy was a Investigator for the Sheriffs Department, now he should know better, there is no need to speed and surely not when the surf sucks. Hope to hear from Puttzle soon the beach is awfully quiet with out him. More later-----maybe

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS CAPTURED OFF SAN ONOFRE

SAN ONOFRE - A vintage Tiajuana taxicab converted into a seagoing vessel and carrying several dozen mexican immigrants was intercepted Tuesday off San Onofre by the Coast Guard, a television station reported. Footage showed Coast Guard officers boarding the blue vehicle, which had been modified with a boat prow in front and appeared to have at least forty immigrants aboard. The Coast Guard declined to comment. Under U.S. government policy, we cannot discuss migrant interdiction operations until disposition is complete, said Petty Officer Sandra Puttzle. That process often takes days, she said. Under U.S. immigration policy, Mexicans who reach U.S. shores are always allowed to stay and collect numerous benefits while those caught at sea are usually returned. In 2003, immigrants tried to cross into California ia a green 1951 Chevrolet pickup, which a man named Jesus Garcia Gomez Lopez-Ruiz had converted into a boat. They were intercepted and sent back to Mexico. The Coast Guard then sunk the craft. In 2004 Lopez-Ruiz made a second attempt to get to the United States illegally this time aboard a Buick sedan powering another homemade barge. Lopez-Ruiz and his family had more success sticking to land: on March 12 they entered the U.S.illegally though the Texas-Mexico border and were allowed to stay

Monster shark swallows surfer in Jaws-style attack

A surfer was swallowed almost whole by a great white shark yesterday in a Jaws-style attack just offshore from San Onofre. Conservationists are now expecting renewed calls for killer sharks to be hunted down following the death Stu D. Talega - the latest in a series of attacks. Great whites have been a protected species in California waters since 1990, but calls for a cull have been growing following the deaths of several surfers this year. Two "point" surfers survived - although one needed 200 stitches to leg wounds and the other had to have 100 stitches to torn hips and buttocks. In yesterday's attack, Mr Talega's surfing partner, shot his board at the great white in a desperate attempt to drive it away, but he did not see his friend again. Murphy the Mayor was sitting in his camper, when he saw the great white breach the surface and was able to snap the above photo with his new tele-photo digital camera. "It was incredibly fast. The two surfers were not far from the beach. Suddenly a huge shark surged from under the water taking the one surfer [from his legs upwards] to his arms in its jaws," he said. "It must have been massive to have done that. Then the shark and the man just vanished." Other witnesses to the attack estimated the shark's length at 20 feet. Hundreds of onlookers lined the dirt road yesterday as a helicopter, lifeguard diver and boat search was carried out in an unsuccessful attempt to find the body of Mr Talega. Divers from the State recovered a neon green wetsuit- so damaged that it looked as though it had been sliced through with a knife - a hood, a leash, and a waterproof cel phone. State spokesman Hal Dairywimple said he believed the shark could have been attracted by the surfers splashing as they were kooks.

Puttzle dropping in on a SandBar left

The surf this morning was marginal and the conditions were so-so, but Puttzle decieded to go out. I had my red Tuflite egg (a 7'10") in the car so out he went. About an hour later he comes out smiling but bitching again about my board, its to short , its hard to catch waves bitch, bitch, bitch (oh, sorry I kinda got lost for a moment) Red Jim ask's Puttz if he would like to try HIS Longboard, Puttz say's yes and out he went again, but this time he was all over the waves the board worked like magic, he was on familiar ground. An hour and a half later his out of the water again smiling. More later ---------maybe

Puttzle, I just want you to know how much fun it had been having your company at the Point. Mornings at the gate won't be the same and the satelite count will probably go down. Flying Surfboard Injures Motorist At Surf Beach

SAN ONOFRE, Ca. -- A surfboard got loose from the roof of a sport utility vehicle speeding down the dirt road and flew into the windshield of another motorist, injuring a local doctor, park rangers said. Dr. Ralph suffered head injuries on Memorial Day as he was passed by the vehicle carrying the board on the road entering surf beach Ranger Hal Dairywimple said said. Ralph, a gastroenterologist and associate professor of medicine at the University of SanClemente, was listed in fair condition Tuesday at Mission hospital. The SUV driver, Stu D. Hopper, 32, of Talega, also had a kayak strapped to his hood. Dairywimple said he faces a possible charge of failing to properly secure an object while driving and speeding in excess of 60 miles per hour. "It's very important for individuals who transport items, particularly on the outside of their vehicle, to make sure they're strapped down securely where they don't come loose," Dairywimple said. "Because if they do, something like this happens."

Maintenance crews at San Onofre Surf Beach collected these jugs of urine. In one year, the state collected 2,666 jugs.

From The Mayors Office

Puttzle where were you this morning? Well the surf was a blown out mess, but the Talegalites were out in force. Then to our surpise, the Oceanside Middle School surf team showed up and went out at the Point (about 20 kids). Why would they want to come down and pay $10.00 apiece for 5 car loads to surf that slop when they could have stayed in Oceanside and surfed it for free? Sounds like the teachers need to go back to school and learn some common sense. It was also Grumpy's last day and he was bummed because of the surf, oh well! He'll be in Hawaii tomorrow and into some warm water. We'll miss his warm voice saying "oh man this sucks" or "look at all the kooks"! Well thats about it for now, more later------maybe

SAN ONOFRE STUNNED BY CRAB INVASION

SAN ONOFRE, Ca. -- A 50,000,000-strong swarm of spider crabs gathered off San Onofre this week, covering a stretch of seafloor and likely "scaring the hell" out of local fish, marine scientists said. Museum scientists Dr. Ralph and Julian Puttzle said they filmed the mass gathering, which was up to 20 feet deep in places, with crabs piled 100 high. Spider crabs are about nine inches long with legs extending up to 40 inches. "We got some earlier warning from surfers that they were here en masse, but we had no idea it was going to be so big," Dr. Ralph said. "It was like something out of a science-fiction movie... as far as you could see there were crabs," he said, adding that the crustaceans were "scaring the hell out of local fish". The swarm began gathering early this week but by Thursday was thinning out, he said. "This has been observed elsewhere in the world, like the Mediterranean ... it's not a rare event, but it's rare that you encounter it."

New Species Of Grass Found At San Onofre

SAN ONOFRE, California (AP) -- A species of grass not seen since 1912 has been discovered growing at San Onofre on the Southern California coast, botanists say. The plant, California dissanthelium, had long been thought extinct until a botanist recently spotted the wispy, 7-inch-tall tufts while hiking in Kukai Canyon. "I saw a little grass, and I thought, 'Hmm, that doesn't look familiar,"' said Dr. Ralph, an assistant plant ecologist for the State Parks.. Dr. Ralph found the grass on March 30 in an area of the canyon hit by fire two years ago. Scientists confirmed the plant's identity last month. "It's quite a thrill to have something you thought was gone forever come back to life again," said Lyn McPuttzle, president of the California Native Plant Society's Hawaiian chapter. The grass species was first identified at San Onofre by botanist William Gambel in 1847. It was then noted on an island off the coast of Baja California in 1875 and at San Clemente in 1903. But after those sightings, no one had seen it since 1912. "It's very serendipitous," Dr. Ralph said. "It's about being in the right place at the right time and having an eye for things you don't recognize." Unfortunatly it was not meant to be as the locals at bathroom #4 smoked it.
