I knew it all along. Three years back, in 1978, there was one swimming in front of Old Man's. I'm a believer.

Anonymous said...

That ain't nothing,Uncle. I was driving to San Onofre yesterday, and saw a gotdamn spotted unicorn.

Huell Howser said...

Dude, I reside in Manhattan Beach CA.
There's a bar on MB Blvd. up from the pier called The Mermaid. Can you believe that.

HELP said...

Here's my arm!!! Nice photo shop!!! Where's the creature from the black lagoon??? Oh, the Mermaid is in Hermosa by the way. Strand at the pier is the location.

tommy trash said...

HELP, I didn't know that. You know Velzy's dead. Hell's bells, is Pancho's still there up by Rosecrans?
For chrrisake, where does time go. Is Greg Noll still alive?

huell howser jr. said...

Help, that ain't no Photoshop, if you think it is you are nuts. That is a bona-fide mermaid swimming around there.

larry howser said...

I think the guy got the Buccaneer in Manhattan, for the Mermaid in Hermosa mixed up. The Poop Deck is gone. Lulu's white stop is gone. Oh, well.

I.M. da Walrus said...

The BEATLES are the greatest band ever! Why are the boomtown rats always played on this station?

Johnny Fingers said...

'Walrus', Google video 'I Don't Like Mondays'.

Anon' #1, did anyone else visualize the spotted unicorn. They are worth lots of moolah.

da' Bull said...

My gawd that mermaid film is astonishing. I am a believer for sure. I thought Huell Howser had a stroke. Now, he's living in Manhattan Beach. Everything is strange nowaday.

Anonymous said...

I just don't get it. Why do people refuse to believe mermaids don't exist. I've seen them, they're real as real can be.

Way Back said...

Piece Of Pizza? Had a piece lately? PCH in Manhattan. Stans? Green Store? Pitcher House? Sure the Deck is gone? How about the Riviera where we rented those good surf mats? Siscos and Big J McNeeley playing, Jimmers, Blue Book? Sub sandwich place on Hermosa Ave in down town Hearmosa, Fosters Freeze? Light House? Insomniac?

Mike Bright said...

I remember La Paz bar after Velzy moved his shop. In fact me and George Kapu used to sleep on the balsa chips! Remember, I know you do.

Eye on LA said...

'Way Back', just who are you anyway, how do you know all this info. Jimmer's was Jimmer Lindsay, 'Blue Book' was Bugbee just up from Players. That astuff was the north end of town. Anyways, Bones, Tubes remembers nothing about the 'old days'. Maybe McNeely played at the bowling alley at Artesia and PCH. Is Sisco's the same as Ciscos [Andale]
Remember the Hig Seas down the street from Lighthouse, I know you do.

Ricky Hatch said...

I also remember when you and Cabell went to C Street Ventura. I think Joey drove but not sure? It was for the contest. Remember, I hope you do!

Murphy was about two hours from San Diego when he was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, "Are you going to San Diego?"

"Sure," answered Murphy, "do you need a lift?"

"Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I've got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the San Diego Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me? I'll give you $100 for your trouble."

"I'd be happy to", said Murphy. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back of the Murphy's camper and carefully strapped into their seat belts, and off they went.

Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of San Diego when suddenly he was horrified! There was Murphy walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to Murphy. "What the hell are you doing here?" he demanded, "I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo."

"Yes, I know you did", said Murphy, "but we had money left over, so now we're going to Sea World."

Way Back said...

ooop,s Ciscos it is or was! Hey, long time huh? Players, Steve Aaberg and Lance played there. Hell I'm going to Stans to get some beer and I might stop by Edwards Market for some food. Maybe Lum will be there. On the strand was Jean drinks. Best smoothies at the time! Drop in ot the Mermaid in a few, Burch will be there having double scotch,s. Jimmy Brown,s mom worked at the Irish place on Hermosa av on the east side of Pier av.

Anonymous #6 said...

Yes, Rick, you are correct. Cabell drove with Knuckles Edmundson and Tubes. Cabell made a wrong turn, wound up driving wrong way on the Ventura Freeway on the way to California St.

back in the 50's again said...

'Way Back', remember Garvey at the 'Deck', I knew you would. Jean's drinks were popular because she'd spike Velzy's drink with vodka. Tropics near the Biltmore Hotel. Is Callahan's the bar where they had .25
all you could eat spaghetti on Tuesday.

Dick Barrimore of Anderson Street said...

Certainly you remember the great parties in Sunset with Haley and the notorious H.B boys. When you pulled up in that green and gold Jaguire da boys " chins hit the ground". Whattya say Steak, you had great taste in cars but you were a half ass volleyball player.

Way Back said...

That was Gar-babe at the Deck. Dewey guarding at the Biltmore pool. Callahans is the place Browns mom worked. How about the crew at Velzys in Venice. Dewey, Deese, Smiley, Mead, Ige (IGGY), Tuthill. Shop phone was a pay phone, That's EX 99059 just in case you forgot? Cooper would work some times, Portagee too. Oh, Hibachi by the Manhattan Pier. Chubby at the grill. Little B on Marine st! Hatch and I worked the in the parking lot. How about sanding Dewey's 46 Ford woodie, (Termite) to go to Tressels. Too much fun had by all in da so-bay! Mermaid had all you could eat breakfast on Sunday. They hated to see us coming!

Way Back said...

OOOP"S that's EX 99095 at the Venice shop. Hell, the mind is going!!!

Anonymous said...

'Way Back', Frank Namm owned the Hibachi which is now in Hollywood. Barrymore, the deal is Tubes used to play VB at Ole's house in Sunset Beach. Ole made Blizzards for Tubes which was Tequilla mixed with Fresca.
Incidentally, the mind is the first thing to go. Remember, the Saucy Dog on the way to da'Bu.

old days revisited said...

Hey, you guys, this is San-O Daze not a South Bay blog. Now, listen up, and listen up good. Stay on topic or else.

Sonny Vardeman said...

I remember giving a photo of the Steak to Ole which he promptly put over his door at the shop on 14th street S.B. Than Bruce Jones took over and kept said photo in the same place. You know the famous photo with the cigarette in his right hand.

Omnipresent said...

DICK BARRYMORE OF ANDERSON ST. Yes, but Tubesteak is loved and cherished up and down the coast.

Way Back said...

Oh yea on the Dog to the Bu. The hell station. The S fell off the Shell station sign on the ocean side of PCH, now Moonshadows restaurant. Jonathon Club if you went with Pfahler. The best in the water at the time! Dora even said so. Told that to Dewey. Guys think they know so called surf history? How about the orchard at the sanctuary across PCH from the BU. Great oranges. Hey, Jones is still there and so is Capt Jacks. Got a great meal at Jacks a few months ago. Go there guys, food is very good! Sano? Slop waves, Trestles, Church or Cottons! Up and comig nose riders would have nothing to do with that mush wave!

Barney Google said...

Who the hell are you's guys and what are you's talkin about? Is this code speak or what? Are you talking about real people and if you are, I'm lost!!!

Jack Ripper said...

'Way Back', how dare you say our San Onofre is slop. We are steeped in tradition. Malibu is nothing compared to Old Man's. If you can't handle mush then you must leave the water. Heck, you have no idea where Old Joe's is, or Goomu Reef for that matter. How many times have you seen Huell Howser walk on Malibu with his roadies. Did you know Captain Jack's
was the Bayou Club prior to him taking over.

Mousie said...

Barney "Google" Briggs, how's it hanging, bro.

GL4-FISH said...

This one year coming back from the Lance Carson and Tubesteak Extravagaza a semi famous surfer/ celebrity took a giant steemer in the parking lot of a restaurant in Santa Monica right on HWY 1. Have any ideas who?

Way Back said...

Gladstone? Pray tell who? For fish is no big deal and Old Mans is crap, slow to da max! The guys at the so called point have the only wave there that is worth a go!

Lady GaGa said...

Gladstone 4fish, Mike Hyson.

Wimpy said...

Hey, 'Way Back', do you remember Clancy's, Manhattan Beach, back in the old days. Fourteen cent burgers, ten cent fries.

Way Back said...

Yep! Burgers at the Riv were great too. More money though. All you Sano guys missed all of this! Oh yeah, lets get in the car and go to San Clemente for? Oh well, another time in our lives for sure.

bennie merril said...

'Way Back', we didn't miss nothing. Way down here at San Omofre we had Riley's Waffles, all you could eat fish fries at I don't remember the name, but it was at the south end of town. Don't forget the pet store where they sold horsemeat to the 'Nofre crowd, and the orange juice stand where Dora and Johnny Peterson gobbled chocolate long johns.

sixty minute man said...

There's a burger joint in west LA where the garbage collectors go for the juicy hamburger. They are big and tasty with the grease running down your jowls. The car wash guys go there too. Thick onion slice, mayonaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato,
1000 island dressing. $7.00, 3.50 for a soda.

Anonymous said...

Holy krappola '60', that's over $10.00 for burger and soda. That's unheard of.

skinflint said...

Anon' #5, you're correct. That's damn near $11.00 with tax. Who do they think they're kidding?

Coastal Commission said...

'Way Back', there ain't no point at San Onofre. What the hell's wrong with you?

Anonymous said...

Now hold on, not only is there a point, there's a guy who called himself the mayor of the point. His name was Murphy and he had a sidekick named Pretzel, but lately I think they resigned and now the new mayor is Chew and he's a got his own posse of sand-sweeping, chair-settting up, umbrella-unfolding lackeys. Nobody surfs, but they sure can fill up a parking lot.

Way Back said...

Say hi to Rich from the one that knows all??? Good guy and good surfer for sure. Well, that's the only place down there that I see a good wave. Way too many people in the water however! Murf still surfs as good as ever. How about the rest? Warm water is for me and no rubber or cords!!! Go west for 6 hrs!!!!

rick shoe said...

'Way Back', you have totally and irrevocably lost it. How many times have you read here there is no point.
You feel in order to be accepted at San Omofre you must profess there is an nonexsistent jut of land into the ocean. There is none, if there is one prove it for gawd's sake

Way Back said...

Ask the Mayor? I just report what others that are there say???

Anonymous said...

The best time to observe the point as at the lowest of tides. There she'll be like the nose on Tube's face.

Don't park in MY spot said...

Murphy and Pretzel!

Now there's a couple of names form the past.

What ever became of them?

larry said...

I'm down here in PB. Woody's hamburgers are $23.50, large fries $16.00, soda $5.00.

Unidentified Surfer said...

'My Spot', they went out with yesterday's coffee grounds.

A. Little Birdie said...

Pretzel is in the "agricultural" business in the back woods somewhere.

Murphy is now residing at the San Clemente Villas assisted living facility in San Clemente.

Anonymous said...

Murph and Pretzel burnt all their bridges at SanO and were run off like late night trespassers. It's too bad. They were both good surfers and easy to be around in the water, but their parking lot deeds did them in.

Parking Attendant said...

They had each others back whenever one would yell "SLOW DOWN" to any vehicle going more than 2 mph, the other would run out in the road with a raging stinkeye.

You'd think they'd owned the place!

Norco Ned said...

'Larry Said', here in Norco CA In n' Out burgers are $1.45, basket of fries $1.15. Why them knumbskulls in PB would pay almost $20.00 for a burger is beyond me.

Order Up said...

I like mine double, double, animal style on both my burger and
double, double, style on my fries.

7 0n Your Side said...

Attn. Norco Ned, why are the In n' Out's only $1.45 when here in Encinitas they're $3.45? Yeah, why.

Taco Bell said...

Well, good luck Norco Ned. In n' Out raised their prices up again. You'd best have $10.00 when you go back. That's for burger only. More for animal style.

Anonymous said...

Attn. San-O Daze the whole menu has gone sky high. Fries are higher, sodas are higher, onion rings are out of sight, malteds are over the rainbow. That's it for me.

Anon' #2 said...

Our San Onofre surf beach is totally blown out caused by an errant west wind at 22 kts. It don't look good

anon' #3 said...

The water's freezing cold, the wind chill factor is unbelievable. You need your hood, booties, and rubber gloves. Be careful, please.

pinche cabron said...

Hey, Taco Bell, the reason In n' Out, and places like that are so high is minimum wage is $10.00 an hour. Those guys are making $30,000.00 a year. That's why you're paying top dollar for burgers, fries, cokes, onion rings.

Big Chuck said...

My boyfriend says that after I shower I don't dry myself enough. So now every time I shower I use his towel to dry my ass and balls. Sorry sweetie but nobody can tell me how I should dry myself

BEN DOVER said...

For crying out loud, Chuckster. Me and the bros were at 'Nofre chugging down some brewskis yesterday and I got the munchies. I headed straight for In n' Out. For a double, double, animal they wanted a double sawbuck, then they wanted ten scoots for
some soggy fries. Can you believe that. $4O.00 for burger & fries and $10.00 for a soda. YIKES!

Anonymous said...

Chuck, why don't you and your muscle bound pal invest in a huge, magnificent, black, didldo all lubed up ready to go?

Silent Shopper said...

Heck, BEN DOVER, I was at In n'Out by the I-5 last night there was at least 40 cars in line to spend their hard earned cash for that burger & fries.

fritz coleman said...

O, for gawd's sake, I was at Ted's Place in Laguna Cliffs, 5 oz. jumbo patty with the works, onion wedge, tomato, pickles, shredded lettuce,
sesame seed jumbo bun, $2.99. If you're paying $30.00 for an In n' Out
you must be nuts or a Marine.

Anonymous said...

Ted's is the best greasy spoon in south county. The car shows on the weekend are a bonus. Murph used to show up in his cherry van until Pretzel stole and left it as a wreck in San Juan.

DMV said...

Pretzel has left a string of ex-Murphy vehicles abandoned about the county. All with expired tags and fees due and still in murphys name.

Now there are numerous bench warrants out for Murphy which may be why hes in hiding.

food to die for said...

Anon' #12, yes, indeed, Ted's Place is the greasiest of all greasy spoons. Load up with 1,000 island dressing for smoothness, help yourself to the hot peppers, pickles, spicy carrot sticks, at the complimentary buffet. Bon appetitt.

Arkansas Larry said...

Anonymous #20, is that San Juan, Puerto Rico or San Juan, Capistrano.

Anon' 'B' said...

Hi everybody, I was at Ted's place last night and there was a drunk passed out on the ground outside in the parking lot.

Anonymous said...

That was no drunk. That was Murphy probably in a diabetic seizure. He comes by Ted's every week looking for all the cars that Pretzel stole. After a couple of triple burgers and fries his blood sugar goes bonkers and out he goes. If you had waited a few moments, he would have been fine.

Murph, Pretzel is gone, come back and negotiate your role with Chew. There's a place at the point for everyone.

Anonymous said...

Anon 25,

Right you are. Murph has been part of the SanO legend for at least a few years, let's find a place for him.

SHF Metz said...

Anon', there is a place reserved for Murphy in the exclusive "Legend's Hall of Fame" at San Onofre. All he must do is state he accepts.

DUI said...

Anon' 'B', when the drunk stumbled out of Ted's Place and fell to the ground, was there a blue van with San Onofre license brackets nearby?

Anonymous said...

He's in Saddleback Memorial ICU.

yard foreman said...

The blue van is impounded at San Clemente towing center. $180.00 per diem plus towing fees of $110.00 cash. No check.

Anonymous said...

Murph gave up fame to become a crossing guard at the local tennis and golf club. Now he's being sued for leaving the water on which caused the hillside to fall destroying dozens of Shorecliffs homes. Let no good deed go unpunished.

Anonymous said...

His whole world is falling down. He ruled the point for a few years, but like that Egyptian leader, when his people found out the truth, they revolted. The truth can set you free, but it can also ruin a good thing. If you see Murph riding a camel down at SanO cracking a whip, consider his reign over.

Anon # 83 said...

He had his #1 spot in line. He had a reserved spot at The Point. He had his Jr. Ranger badge and gun. He had the massive diesel super duty blue Lance camper with 3unused surfboards carefully tucked away in the upper bunk.

And he threw it all away over a squable with Pretzel about his pole position in the lineup.

tinker bell said...

Anon' #83, what is it you don't understand about, 'there is no point'. believe it, no matter how you wish, there's no point, there never will be a point, give up, get real--puhleeze.

Anonymous said...

If you don't think there's a point, walk straight out from the lifeguard station, then come in and walk fifty feet north and do it again. You will understand the point better and become a believer.

It's too bad Pretzel snaked Murph and caused Murph to take his football and go home.

puzzled said...

Anon', I did as you instructed. There is no point. You want a point go to Rincon, Malibu, Topanga, Cardiff, Latigo, now those are points. No matter how much you dreams mean to you, there is no point at San Onofre State Park. Next thing you'll be having people think Old Man's is a point. Can you believe it. I can't.
