Our Seal Beach Surf Guide

This was our tour guide for our Seal Beach photo excursion.

He has a long association with surfing in Southern California. He seemed reliable and quite knowledgeable about the local history, though he actually spent most of his youth surfing at Malibu. He had lots of pictures from the Gidget movies and T.V. series, upon which he says he served as one of the technical consultants and a body double. In this black & white publicity picture, his body was used (that's him on the right) and the actor's head airbrushed over his.

He also was a founding member of the Beach Boys, but like Pete Best with the Beatles, he was dumped by the other members early on. Now, if you can't rely on a guide like this to give you the scoop on which surf break is which, I don't know what the world has come to. He was very careful about answering our questions, appearing to be deep in thought for maybe 20 seconds each time before answering. He was obviously recalling memories with great care in order to give us the most accurate information.

He has asked us not to reveal his name or current location because he is a member of Project Chanology, but he also says he knows Tubesteak personally and posts regularly on his blog.

Dahl Develoment Corp, Diane Harkey, And the San Clemente Ocean Trust based in Talega has reached an agreement with the State Park Agency to proceed with plans to build a 564 room hotel and golf course along what would have been the 241 toll road extension. In an interview with Orange County Register reporter Curren Swadasal, Harkey was quoted as saying " If it's good enough for our Talega residents , then it should be good enough for everyone else" The project has escaped public scrutiny due to the recent toll road action by the coastal commission, which is uninvolved in the project due to jurisdictional restraints.

SAN ONOFRE, CA (Reuters) - Shirts and caps proclaiming the victory of the Transportation Corridor Agencies -- when the TCA actually lost before the Coastal Commission -- have ended up in the hands of poor Talegan children.

Dozens of shirts and caps, which had been manufactured in advance to celebrate the TCA’s expected victory before the CC, were handed over to children in the community of Talega.

TCA victory shirts and other garments are produced in advance so that TCA supporters can put them on to celebrate immediately after the final vote of agencies that must approve the Toll Roads. Garments from hearings when the TCA loses are obviously unwanted, so the TCA dumps them in Talega. There was similar disposal of the Patriots' Super Bowl 2008 victory apparel.

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?
