PT Boat Torpedoed In 1943 Washes Up At San-O

There was strong ground swell Sunday night at San Onofre. It washed up this World War II coastal patrol vessel. The Navy has identified the ship as one struck in the bow by a single torpedo from a German U-boat while on patrol off San Clemente in 1943. It was the same U-boat that, coincidentally, washed up at San Onofre later that same year. Finally, the PT Boat has washed up near where its old adversary washed up 64 years earlier.

One of the guys I met at the Point verified what the Navy said. He seems to know a lot of the local history. His name is Foxbat. His cousin was a deckhand on the PT Boat. All the crew swam to shore. There was no loss of life. Only two crewmen were injured. His aunt has films of the crew swimming ashore and he told me that he has more pictures of the event "than you can shake a stick at." When he told me this, he actually pulled out a stick and shook it to make his point. I don’t think that before that moment I had ever seen anyone actually shake a stick to make a point.

Golly! Thats fascinating! Do you have any close-ups?

You take a legitimate picture and photoshop out the prop on the wind indicator?

WHY?

Why? Because it's there, toopid.

Huell: Sure, bring the crew over and we'll do an episode.

P.T.: It's hard to see, but the prop is there. The picture was taken with a slow shutter speed so the propeller, which was spinning, is blurred. Download a large version of the picture by clicking on the small picture and then save the large picture to your computer. Then view it with Windows picture and fax viewer, or the software you normally use to view images, and use the magnify feature. You'll be able to see the prop more clearly.

Grinch: You have good eye!

I hate to be the bearer of sad tidings, but Sydney you're nutz. Fyi, that's a SOLAG rubbish truck that overturned last October.

I know Foxbat and it wasn't his "stick" that he pulled out of his pants and shook at you. We appreciate that you are cleaning up your act Sydney and used the word "stick."

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that photo is a fake. PT boats were made out of plywood. And they had machine guns on them. I know because my brother skippered one.

Ted K -
And you figured that the machine guns would still be intact after sinking
and washing up and down the reef for 64 years? It's that kind of logic that would make a man choose to go back to a party to talk with his buddies rather than rescue a girl trapped about 10 feet deep in a car filling with water. Ad NOT all PT boats were made of wood.
