State parks suspend sales of annual passes

The entry kiosk at San Onofre State Beach confirmed this morning that it no longer is selling annual passes, and the Web site for Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach likewise affirmed that passes are no longer available.

On the statewide Web site, www.parks.ca.gov, a message appears if you click on "Annual day-use pass $125." Passes "are currently not available for purchase," the message states. "Online pass sales will resume Aug. 17, 2009. We appreciate your patience."

State officials could not be reached today, either at Orange County's district office in San Clemente or in Sacramento. Offices close on Fridays because of employee furloughs.

Elizabeth Goldstein, president of the California State Parks Foundation, said the parks department could be facing closure of 80 to 100 of the park system's 279 parks, historical sites and recreation areas. The foundation is a support group for California state parks.

"Last month the governor signed the state budget," the foundation's Web site says. "It contained an additional $6 million cut to state parks, bringing the total general fund cut for this budget year to $14.2 million."

Could public lose access to San Onofre State Beach?
