Breast - Feeding Cuts Food Allergy Risk

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 14 (HealthDay News) -- Breast-feeding in the first three months of life appears to help shield children from developing food allergies.

That's just one of a number of findings on food allergies scheduled to be presented this week at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in Dallas.

Research has determined a possible role for food allergy prevention strategies in high-risk children, including maternal food avoidance in pregnancy, breast-feeding, maternal food avoidance while breast-feeding, use of hypoallergenic formulas, delayed introduction of allergenic foods and probiotics, noted one expert.

"A review of 18 studies demonstrates a significant protective effect of exclusive breast-feeding for at least three months for children with high risk for atopy (genetic tendency to develop allergic diseases) against the development of atopic dermatitis and early childhood asthma-like symptoms," Dr. Robert Wood, international health director for pediatric allergy and immunology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, said in a prepared statement.

He offered a number of recommendations for children at high risk of allergic diseases:

Women should avoid peanuts and tree nuts during pregnancy and while breast-feeding. Mothers should supplement breast-feeding with a hypoallergenic formula (extensively or partially hydrolyzed). Delay feeding these children solid foods until they're six months old. Delay introduction of milk and egg until age 1 and peanut and tree nuts until age 3. Start early intervention when signs of food allergy appear (secondary prevention).

In a planned presentation about allergies and dietary restrictions, another expert noted that a person may have an allergy to one member of a food family, but may be able to eat other members of the same food family.

He is bumming because he is being washed again, we have to wash him everyday because we are allergic to cat dander, but my stupid ex-wife HAD to have it, we paid frikin $700.00 for him and the kids won't let me get rid of him. Oh well, so much for surfing.

Famous "Duke of Uke" Cat Dies at 99

Bill Tapias cat was born in 1906, That means the black cat is 99 years old and was born before the model t was invented.
Baby's age will be recognized by Cat Fancy magazine in its December 2007 issue.
The cat's owner, Bill Tapia, of Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii., recently entered him in the magazine's oldest cat contest.
After 99 years of caring for the long-lived cat, Bill said he was beginning to think that Baby would outlive his owner.
Bill, Who's 100th birthday will be on 1-1-2007 will be re-recognized as the worlds oldest traveling musician.
Bill readily admits the cat was involved in an experimental process to extend it's life and later the science was halted due to it's implications for the faulty science at it's creation, but it has been a great run for the cat (and Bill) Bill Can be heard Playing to the masses at the North Beach area near Ole Hanson Beach club where pico meets the sand in beautiful North San Clemente, Ca. on Wednesdays during the summer.

San Onofre Turtle

On my morning walk down by where I caught the dynaleopper last week, I found this malformed turtle, Draw your own conclusions, but the trash problem is significant, San onofre is no longer suitable for children or parents to enjoy. San Clementes "north" beach is much better and is paved AND a 7-11 convienence store is there for ice cream. Ample parking, AND no deformed animals...Archy

This extremely rare and beautiful "pink dolphin" was spotted and photographed by Capt. Erik Rue of Calcasieu Charter Service on June 24th, 2007, during a charter fishing trip on Calcasieu Lake south of Lake Charles , LA.

It is small in comparison to the others it is traveling with and appears to be a youngster traveling with mama. After spotting the beautiful mammal cruising with a pod of four other dolphins, Rue and his guests idled nearby while watching and photographing the unusual sight for more than an hour. "It was absolutely, stunningly pink," Rue said.

The albino calf's pinkish appearance is likely produced by blood vessels underneath its relatively thin layer of blubber that would ordinarily be masked by a typical dolphin's gray coloration. According to marine biologists, this was only the third reported sighting of an albino bottlenose dolphin in the Gulf of Mexico (going back to 1994) and the fourteenth spotting anywhere in the world (the first coming in 1962).

Imus was fired in April after he called the Rutgers University's women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" on the air.

HONOLULU (AP) - Television bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman apologized Wednesday for repeatedly using a racial slur in a profanity-laced tirade during a private phone conversation with his son that was recorded and posted online.

Chapman, star of A&E's hit reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter," responded after The National Enquirer posted a clip of the conversation in which Chapman uses the N-word in reference to his son's girlfriend.

A&E officials did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment from The Associated Press. Chapman issued a statement apologizing for the comments.

The recording was first posted online by the Enquirer. It was unclear who recorded the conversation or how the tabloid obtained the 1 1/2-minute clip in which Chapman uses the N-word six times. A woman at the Enquirer said no one would be available to comment after hours.

In the conversation, Chapman urges his son to break up with his girlfriend. He also expresses concern about the girlfriend going public about the TV star's use of the N-word.
In the clip, Chapman also stated he doesn't care that his son's girlfriend is black.
In a statement, the 54-year-old Chapman said he has "utmost respect and aloha for black people who have suffered so much due to racial discrimination and acts of hatred.
"I did not mean to add yet another slap in the face to an entire race of people who have brought so many gifts to this world," he said. "I am ashamed of myself and I pledge to do whatever I can to repair this damage I have caused."

Chapman said, "My sincerest, heartfelt apologies go out to every person I have offended for my regrettable use of very inappropriate language. I am deeply disappointed in myself for speaking out of anger to my son and using such a hateful term in a private phone conversation."
Chapman said the clip was completely taken out of context.

"I was disappointed in his choice of a friend, not due to her race, but her character," he said. "However, I should have never used that term."

Chapman said he is meeting with his spiritual adviser, Rev. Tim Storey, who is black, and hopes to meet with other black leaders, "so they can see who I really am and teach me the right thing to do to make things right, again."

"I know that all of my fans are deeply disappointed in me, as well, as I have tried to be a model for doing the right thing," he said. "I did not do the right thing this time, and hope you will forgive me."

The Honolulu-based bounty hunter first grabbed headlines for apprehending serial rapist and Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Mexico in 2003.

Supplement: The news radio station reports this morning that A&E has suspended production of the show "Dog, The Bounty Hunter."

HELICOPTER UPDATE!

I was in that helicopter yesterday and snapped this photo as we flew over Puttzle's head. As is typical with "The Point", there is one guy taking off and three guys hopping him.

While in the water this morning a water dropping helocopter made an emergancy landing in the field near the gate. It flew right over our heads and barely made it over the bluff just behind my camper. Puttzle has pictures of it flying right over his head! Missing him by inches!!! The crew was from Laguna Beach. (pretty in pink) In all honesty, I have to say these guys are "TOP NOTCH" fire fighters and did a great job controling the fires, they were returning to San Diego when they incountered the trouble that forced them down and to land safely (thank God).
